What is a Reverse Proxy?
In computer networks, a reverse proxy is a type of proxy server that retrieves resources on behalf of a client from one or more servers. These resources are then returned to the client as though they originated from the proxy server itself. While a forward proxy acts as an intermediary for its associated clients to contact any server, a reverse proxy acts as an intermediary for its associated servers to be contacted by any client. (Wikipedia)
If the reverse Proxy, like our SSL Security Proxy, also adds an additional SSL layer it is also called TLS termination proxy.
Advantages of using a Reverse Proxy / TLS Termination Proxy
- Reverse proxies can hide the existence and characteristics of an origin server or servers.
- Application firewall features can protect against common web-based attacks.
- In the case of secure websites, a web server may not perform SSL encryption itself, but instead offloads the task to a reverse proxy.
- Providing an additional layer of defense
How does the Aloaha SLL Proxy work?
Our Aloaha SSL Security Proxy is a proxy server that is used to handle incoming TLS connections, decrypting the TLS and passing on the unencrypted request to the target servers. Our Proxy can be used to reduce the load on the main servers by offloading the cryptographic processing to another machine, and to support servers that do not support SSL/TLS.
