Aloaha introduces "Secure PIN Entry" for smart cards
Ibbenbueren, Germany, 11 September, 2006 – Building on the existing smart card and card reader know how, Wrocklage Intermedia GmbH, an international leader and developer of digital signature, PDF production and PDF modification software, announced today the support of “Secure PIN Entry” for its awarded PDF Signature utilities. This high security feature will further contribute to a broad distribution of Aloaha Digital Signature Solutions.
Aloaha offers its customer already a large variety of ways passing a smart card PIN to the card. PINs can be entered manual, cached or just kept in a safe location to enable the customer to batch sign a large amount of documents without the annoying PIN dialog.
Aloahas leading smart card technology allows the user to access supported smart cards native - without having the burden to install additional software such as Java, CSPs and PKSC#11 modules. Traditional ways of accessing the smart cards via CSP are supported by Aloaha as well.
One disadvantage of smart cards nowadays is sometimes the lack of free CSPs which renders such cards useless for most applications. Another disadvantage is that CSPs usually do not support the secure PIN entry via card reader PIN Pad. In a secure environment, such as datacenters to be used for mass signatures, the lack of secure PIN entry might not be a problem. In times of daily upcoming new Viruses, Trojans and other IT Threats home users are always running the risk that a PIN entered via keyboard might be sniffed/captured by such “evil” software.
The Aloaha secure PIN entry for native supported card makes it impossible for “evil” Software to get hold of a PIN. Aloaha sends the supported Class 2 Card Reader a special crafted command to ask a PIN via PIN PAD and pass this PIN directly to the card. Like this the PIN itself NEVER leaves the secure environment of the card reader and makes it impossible to sniff it in the USB Cable or to find it the user’s computer RAM.
